By YUDI Clothing – Your Trusted Garment Manufacturer in China
As a fashion brand owner or sourcing manager, you know that receiving your first clothing sample can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Will it match your tech pack? Is the fit right? Is the fabric as promised?
At YUDI Clothing, we’ve spent over 21 years helping global apparel brands avoid common production mistakes by ensuring every sample passes a professional, detailed inspection before bulk production begins.
Grab a coffee (or wine—we don’t judge) and follow our Clothing Sample Inspection Checklist, designed to help you spot issues early and save time, money, and headaches later.
1. Core Checkpoints: Confirm the Essentials
Before assessing appearance or fit, make sure the sample actually matches the order specs.
✅ Order Number & Style Code
Double-check that the sample’s order number and style code match your tech pack and PO. Mislabeling is more common than you’d think.
✅ Size Label Accuracy
Confirm that the size label, care label, and hangtag all match the ordered size. A mismatched label can lead to costly returns.
2. Appearance & Fit: First Impressions Matter
🧍♀️ Overall Silhouette Check
Lay the garment flat—does the shape match the intended fit? For example, does your “oversized tee” look fitted instead?
📏 Symmetry Test
Inspect collar alignment, pocket position, and sleeve lengths. A tilted pocket or uneven hem can ruin the look.
🎨 Color Consistency
Check fabric under both natural daylight and indoor lighting. Fabric often looks different in varying light conditions.
3. Size & Measurement Accuracy: Precision is Key
📐 Key Measurements
Use a soft measuring tape to verify key dimensions—shoulder width, chest, waist, sleeve length, etc.—against your tech pack. Acceptable tolerance is usually ±1 cm.
👚 Special Styles
For oversized or relaxed fits, check areas like shoulder drop, sleeve opening, and body length. Style can be subjective, but measurements should never lie.
4. Fabric & Trims: Quality You Can Feel
🧵 Fabric Composition & Texture
Ensure fabric matches your expectations in feel, weight, and composition. Always test beyond the swatch.
🔩 Trims & Accessories Check
Zippers (ideally YKK), buttons, snaps, and linings should be tested for functionality and security. Tug lightly on buttons, zip up/down several times—your customer will.
5. Craftsmanship Details: Where Good Becomes Great
Stitching Quality
Look for consistent stitching—typically 8–10 stitches per inch. Avoid skipped stitches, loose threads, or puckering seams.
🌟 Decorative Elements
Whether it’s embroidery, screen printing, or rhinestones, check positioning, color vibrancy, and durability.
6. Functionality & Comfort: Real-Life Performance
🧑🤝🧑 Wear Test
Try it on (or fit on a model). Can the wearer move freely? Stretch, squat, lift arms—comfort and mobility are key to retention.
💧 Special Features Test
For functional garments (e.g. waterproof, stretch, or thermal fabric), verify performance. Test water repellency or elasticity before approving.
7. High-Risk Areas: Where Problems Happen Most
🧵 Fit Chain Evaluation
Even if one area measures correctly, another might not. For example, correct body length doesn’t guarantee a comfortable sleeve fit.
🎨 Color Fastness Test
Rub the fabric with a white cloth—does the color bleed? If yes, it could lead to major post-purchase complaints.
🧼 Wash Test
For denim or cotton blends, run a wash test to check shrinkage, fading, or twisting.
📦 Packaging Review
Is the garment folded properly? Does the polybag match size and branding requirements? Are care instructions included and readable?
8. Final Decision: Internal Approval Flow
🤝 Team Review & Sign-Off
Ensure your design team, QC team, and procurement all review and approve the sample before moving forward. One missed detail can affect your entire batch.
